About Kainchi Dham — History & Significance

Kainchi Dham sits at a spot on the Bhowali-Almora road where the highway makes two sharp hairpin bends in quick succession — those two "kainchis" (scissors) give the site its name. The ashram was established in 1964 by the saint Neem Karoli Baba, known to devotees as Maharaj-ji, on land donated by a local resident. Built on the banks of the Kosi River at around 1,400 metres, it is primarily devoted to Hanuman, though its wider reputation rests on Maharaj-ji's teachings of love, service and devotion.

Steve Jobs visited as a young man in 1974, and the ashram has since drawn a steady stream of well-known visitors alongside thousands of ordinary devotees every year. Every 15 June, Kainchi Dham marks Pratishtha Divas — its foundation day — with a large Bhandara that draws lakhs of pilgrims and is by far the busiest day of the year at the ashram; private vehicles are usually restricted beyond Bhowali on that day, with shuttle services running the last stretch.

Places to Visit Near Kainchi Dham

~9 km

Ghorakhal Golu Devta Temple

Known as the "temple of justice," where devotees tie bells after a wish is fulfilled — thousands of them now hang across the complex. A short, scenic detour from Kainchi Dham via Bhowali.

~17 km

Nainital

Naini Lake, the Naina Devi Temple, Mall Road and the Hanuman Garhi temple make Nainital the natural base for a Kainchi Dham trip, with boating, shopping and viewpoints to fill an extra day.

~20–22 km

Bhimtal Lake

Quieter and less crowded than Naini Lake, with a small island in the middle. Good for boating and a relaxed lunch stop on the way back from Kainchi Dham.

~9 km

Bhowali

The junction town on the way to Kainchi Dham, well known for its fruit and jam shops. A convenient stop for tea, snacks or a meal before or after darshan.

Travel Tips for Your Kainchi Dham Visit

  • Photography and videography are not allowed inside the temple premises — enjoy the valley and gardens outside instead.
  • Dress modestly; avoid shorts, sleeveless or otherwise revealing clothing.
  • Shoes come off before you enter — wear something easy to slip on and off.
  • Keep mobile phones on silent, and away, inside the temple premises.
  • Carry a light jacket even in summer — the hill air turns cool by evening.
  • Visiting around 15 June (Bhandara)? Expect vehicle restrictions beyond Bhowali and a shuttle for the last stretch.
  • Avoid the monsoon months (July–August) — hill roads in this stretch are landslide-prone.
  • Keep some cash on hand; card and UPI acceptance is patchy once you're off the highway.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Kainchi Dham from Delhi and how long does the drive take?
Kainchi Dham is around 320-340 km from Delhi by road, depending on the route via Moradabad and Haldwani. The drive takes about 7-9 hours, so most travellers either start very early (around 4-5 AM) or break the journey overnight in Kathgodam or Nainital.
How do I reach Kainchi Dham from Kathgodam?
Kathgodam is the nearest railway station, about 38 km from Kainchi Dham via Bhowali. A taxi takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Shared jeeps and private cabs are both available right outside Kathgodam station.
How far is Kainchi Dham from Pantnagar Airport?
Pantnagar is the nearest airport, about 70 km from Kainchi Dham. The taxi drive takes around 2 to 2.5 hours through Haldwani and Bhowali.
Is there an entry fee for Kainchi Dham?
No. Darshan at Kainchi Dham is completely free; only voluntary donations are accepted. Be cautious of anyone near the ashram asking for money for "VIP entry" or tickets — there is no such official facility.
What are the darshan timings at Kainchi Dham?
The ashram is generally open from around 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with Tuesday evenings sometimes extended for kirtan. Timings can shift slightly by season and during the 15 June Bhandara, so it helps to confirm locally if you're visiting on a specific date.
What is the best time to visit Kainchi Dham?
March to June and September to November offer the most pleasant weather. Winters (December to February) are cold but peaceful with fewer crowds, and the monsoon months (July-August) are best avoided because of landslide risk on the hill roads.
Do I need to register in advance for darshan?
No advance registration or online booking is needed for a regular visit — it's walk-in darshan. The one exception is the 15 June Bhandara, when it helps to plan travel and stay well ahead because of the crowds.
Can I stay inside the Kainchi Dham ashram?
The ashram does not run public guest rooms or online room booking. Most visitors stay in Bhowali, Nainital or Bhimtal, all within 20 km, and visit Kainchi Dham for darshan during the day.
Is there a dress code at Kainchi Dham?
Yes. The ashram has asked visitors to avoid short or revealing clothing out of respect for the sanctity of the temple. Modest, comfortable clothing is recommended, and you'll need to remove your shoes before entering.
Is photography allowed inside Kainchi Dham?
No. Photography and videography are officially prohibited inside the temple premises, and mobile phone use is also restricted in some areas. You're welcome to photograph the surrounding valley and gardens outside the temple.
How far is Kainchi Dham from Nainital and Bhimtal?
Kainchi Dham is about 17 km from Nainital and around 20-22 km from Bhimtal, making it an easy half-day add-on to either stay.
What are the approximate taxi fares from Kathgodam to Kainchi Dham?
A private cab one-way typically costs about ₹1,200-1,800 depending on the vehicle, while a shared jeep seat costs roughly ₹150-250 per person. Fares vary with season and fuel prices, so confirm the rate before starting the ride, or book through us for a fixed price.

What Travellers Say

4.8 out of 5 based on [REVIEW COUNT] traveller reviews
Sample review — Kathgodam package (replace before publishing)[Add date]

The cab was on time at the station and the driver knew the road well. We got a good hour and a half at the ashram without feeling rushed, and were back at Kathgodam in time for our train.

Sample review — Delhi 3-day package (replace before publishing)[Add date]

Three days felt like the right amount of time — Kainchi Dham in the morning, Bhimtal in the afternoon, and still time to enjoy Mall Road on the last day. The hotel and vehicle were both comfortable.

Sample review — Kumaon circuit package (replace before publishing)[Add date]

Patal Bhuvaneshwar was the highlight — the guide explained everything well inside the cave. It's a long drive from Almora, so good that the itinerary didn't try to rush it.
